Jia was stood in the middle of reception for the twenty first precincts. She had her blue work overalls on, the mandatory white hard hat and a kit to look for signs of arson or at least figure out a flash point for what had happened. She was glad in a way she had managed to be off duty that day but now, all she wanted to do was be with the people she knew. The friends that were in the hospital but the best way to help was just to do her job.
Not a tall order but one she had requested help with, so far they knew a van had gone into the garage. The building had crumbled and buildings never just did that. There had to be a reason and behind the reason was the person or people responsible. Jia had required help from the bomb squad and a cop or two to help them look around. At least a cop that had managed to escape the nightmare that was the twenty first precinct.
Even as Jia looked up to where the upper floors should be, the daylight streamed through into her eyes as she shook her head. It reminded her of a war zone, she had seen plenty of building like it when she had deployed but that hardly made the sight any easier to bear. Just maybe they could find something useful in the wreckage of the building, that one piece or several pieces that could lead them to the arrested they needed to make.
Any amount of work that lead to that conclusion was good in her book. Jia took to photographing things, moving a few lighter pieces of rubble here and there to track the flames back to one point or several. Sure there was a van seen but she knew better than to trust one source. One source told her that her fiancé was dead and he turned up fine not too long ago. If she saw it with her own eyes then she could believe it, until then. It was just a crime scene.

Bomb squad and arson investigation wasn’t really his cup of tea; but after the precinct had exploded it was all hands on deck. He’d decided that he could at least lend a hand. As long as he didn’t touch anything he could in the very least be another set of eyes. Pierre wanted to find the people who had done this. His sister had been in the building when it all came down. She’d gotten lucky and had made it out alive. There were some who hadn’t. Pierre was frustrated, he still didn’t know the status on his partner. Was Rachel in the building when things happened? He’d not been able to get a hold of her either. Then there was that bomb squad chick Rachel had been harassing him about. She was supposed to be here too or so he’d heard. Just great. Their last meeting had been all but normal. The french patrol officer was careful not to touch anything without proper procedures. There was no point in mucking up this case anymore than it already was. He had no idea who was trying to cover up what but he didn’t like it anymore than the next person. There was trying to keep his head, Pierre couldn’t lose someone else and this had come far to close. Right now all he could do was rein back his emotions as he moved through the scene before him. [googlefont="Oswald"][googlefont="Allura"][googlefont="Abel"] BUT ALL THAT i've been thinking of Tess had been trying to dig down to get to the garage where she figured the evidence could be but from the ground floor level it wasnt going too great. She found a few things on her way, wires, phones, all sorts of electrical components but she wasnt sure if they came from the wall or what it was. She slid what she found into the appropriate bags before deciding to venture back upstairs to see who else was around. The precinct was gone, well it would need a rebuild and those officers that hadn’t made it out.
It came too close to a truth she knew all too well. Things that went bang she could handle, it was her job but losing people. That she couldnt handle well and it all just reminded her of Michael. She tried to shake it out of her head as she heard a few of the names who didnt make it. The detective she had coffee with last week, the one who she ate lunch with on a Wednesday. No work was just work, she could freak out later and cry into a beer at home when it was just her in her apartment. Tess had just about made her way to the front of the building when she saw the two officers there.
Her phone went as she glanced down at the message. ‘I’m alive and okay, shot in the arm, in the ER with the others. Tell my new partner Quinn too.’ As Tess held her breath for a moment before pushing her phone back into her pocket as she dropped off the few evidence bags she had in the boxes at the front as she glanced between the two officers. She knew the woman or at least her face though the other cop, he must be relatively new she figured as she smiled.
“Hey you two.” Tess said as she approached them. “So do we have a plan or just work out from here?” Looking around the place she had known for years it was tough to see it hanging by a thread, no walls and daylight where that horrid florescent lighting used to be. Half a front desk and not even half if she really looked. “Oh meant to ask both, anyone know where Rachel’s partner Quinn is?” Tess asked not entirely sure who she was looking for. At least he got to get the good news, well good news as far as it went with the situation.

Jia appreciated seeing the face of another cop around there, she knew that it was all hands on deck but she knew plenty of officers had taken up at the hospital. Those that never made it had a watchful eye and those that were hanging on or just injured had a whole precinct pulling for them. After all there was hardly much left that was useable in the place that had been called home. It was tough to see it all broken to pieces, Jia just had to get through the rest of the day and go home.
Home to what she knew and a world that made sense to her. At least she hoped it might do after what had happened, she was lucky not to have been involved in it which made working the scene a requirement. Even as she stood there she could see the fire patterns, the scorched wood, concrete and general stench of burning hung in the air. A smell she knew but it grated none the less as she heard movement behind her. Jia turned seeing Tess there, bomb squad had joined the party too and the other male cop as she smiled at them both.
A weary smile but a smile either way, there was no accounting for false effort today. There was nothing much to smile about. “Hey, officers.” Jia said as she glanced toward the male officer there. “I’m open to suggestions here with this.” She said, the scene was huge and there had been fires all over the building. There was no telling where it started or what was the original one at least not as far as she had started.
“You mean the Lieutenant Quinn?” Jia asked them both, not sure who Rachel was or really who her partner Quinn was. The only one she knew was the patrol boss but things changes day to day and week to week so keeping up with patrol was more than her brain could handle. “I think they are still finding out who is where at the moment, so not sure who or where they are.” Jia offered knowing it was little help but then patrol was a different animal and there were that many names flying around it was tough to keep up.

This whole thing was a mess. Pierre listened to the exchange between the women. Then heard something about Rachel’s partner. “As in Murphy?” He quipped up. Though he was still trying to assess what he could of the situation. Bombs weren’t his thing but he could at least be an extra set of hands. He glanced over… it was the same blonde that he and Rachel had been talking about before. Well that made things even more awkward. Though combing through things he couldn’t keep his past thoughts from haunting him. Someone one had to sift through things like this after Katrina. He felt nauseated. “Do we have a headcount yet?” He knew that someone was going to start asking questions. His own sister could have been inside this building. Pierre wasn’t really feeling the excitement of the day’s work ahead. He wanted hospital headcounts, death tolls, the number of officers that reported they were alright. Anything to help. He felt himself fingering his phone. There were any number of people he could call to find information from but it was a waiting game. Trent would be his first go to, who better than his sister’s partner. His attention turned once more in Jia’s direction. “No one’s heard from Lieutenant Quinn either.” His voice choked. “Where’s Murphy?” Hell where was the whole damned precinct. Focus Pierre, focus on your damned job and stop being the cork in the works. No, this wasn’t happening again. They’d all made it out right? Jia Lei Yang, Tess Walker,

[googlefont="Oswald"][googlefont="Allura"][googlefont="Abel"] BUT ALL THAT i've been thinking of There was now more than one Quinn Tess glanced between the two of them, oh this was going to get complicated she thought. It wasnt that one Quinn the patrol lieutenant was bad but two of them, seriously? “No I think there’s another Quinn, the Lieutenant was partnered with someone else lately.” Tess said trying to remember the guys name as she heard the patrol office talk about Murphy. “Yeah Rachel Murphy, got to tell the second Quinn whoever that is that she got shot in the arm but is okay. Then I need to tell her where this Quinn is and if they are okay.” Tess said wondering how anyone was going to get answers.
The place was a mess, everyone was everywhere and the ones who weren’t in hospital, injured or worse were out helping with the normal day to day. Talk about hell in a hand basket. Tess winced hearing the guy ask about a head count, “I’ve not heard anything official yet but it’s not looking good.” She added, there wasnt any sugar coating it and she wasnt the sort to do that to people. Sure a random member of the public, yeah life was great and carry on as normal but they were all way to informed to be taken by the smile and an ‘everything will be okay’ line that usually worked.
Just as Tess was about to start digging around again, trying to put the devastation out of her mind when she heard the guys voice go. Tess glanced over at Jia as she shoved the lid on one of the plastic boxes and brought it over for the patrol guy. Tess placed it behind him, reaching out her hand to guide him to the box. “Hey, just take a seat for a minute okay. We’ll see what we can find out.” Tess offered as she showed him the message from Rachel, trying to get him to sit down.
Rachel was one person they knew was alive and as safe as could be at the hospital. She didn’t even want to think much about the names that would start to come out, the list that would be made and the month or two of dress blues to attend each and every funeral. No that wasn’t today, today they had a job to do and first was keeping the patrol guy from losing whatever strength he had left.

“You know Murphy?” Jia asked surprised though then again the two were Patrol so there was a link. This just got more complicated, it was why she preferred to work in her own little world. No names, just faces she knew and people she nodded to twice a day. Clocking in and clocking out, it just made the world simpler. “Two Quinns, really Patrol needs to have a definition somewhere.” Jia stated as she glanced between the two of them, “Patrol guy, what’s your name?” She asked looking at Quinn, well she could hardly go around calling him Patrol guy even though it worked for her most days.
The head count or body count or a count she wanted no part of. Jia wished it was easier; she had been on the receiving end of a notification. Yes she knew the moment the military had turned up at the door, the faces and the dress just as any cop’s spouse knew the formal dress or car or unknown visitors. It made her heart sink a little more, a list of names that needed to be told. Families that would never get that second chance and she knew that feeling. The dread, the worry and the fear followed by the numbness and grief that followed behind.
“Pretty sure it’s double figures from what I heard a paramedic say. They’re not looking for many live people anymore.” Jia stated with a more sombre tone of voice. Jia heard the patrol guy ask about the Lieutenant as she shook her head. “No one yet but she could have been off today, she might be outside trying to coordinate everything. I hadn’t seen her today so far but I’m sure she’s okay.” Jia said trying to stay positive hearing the mans voice choke as nodded to Tess taking the box. Jia rooted around in her bag as she pulled a bottle of water from it and went over to the guy.
“Do exactly what she tells you to.” Jia said as she motioned to Tess, holding out the water for the guy. “Here drink this for a moment and let me make a call.” Jia said as she pulled her phone out. She knew it was risky, radio silence and all for other suspected devices but she doubted if there were any. The waves would have sent whatever was left sky high as she called for an update of a head count at least. Those alive as she asked for an update on the Lieutenant, placing the phone on speaker as she held it so everyone could hear as the voice started to talk.

“Murphy is my partner.” There was protective glaze over his eyes. Pierre need to take a few minutes so he didn’t do anything stupid. “Who the hell shot her?” Usually Pierre could keep a level head but you didn’t shoot his partner and get away with it. Then Jia started in on there being two Quinns. “Leave my sister out of this, got it.” He didn’t like Jia’s attitude one bit. “The name is Quinn. Patrick Quinn.” He was in a mood and there was no getting him out of it. When Tess showed him the message he nodded politely, he was thankful. Though he needed a few minutes and sitting down wouldn’t accomplish anything. Then he heard Jia mentioning tolls. Pierre had lost a wife in hurricane Katrina and now this where more lives were being lost it was like a battlefield. One they faced everyday. Pierre had people he cared about inside the building when things went to hell. He took the water from Jia with a thankful expression. Calming down some from his temper tantrum. Pierre dug out his phone to try and get in contact with Harland. He also fired off a text to Rachel to check on her. It was a waiting game and it was stupid. He couldn’t just go barreling into the crime scene. Rachel and Pierre had been having a conversation about Tess the other day when the woman had turned his head. “She’s the expert.” He shrugged his shoulders. Pierre stood up and looked towards Tess. “I need on that scene. I don’t care how. I don’t care if I’m just partrol. Let me work this.” He needed the closure. He could hear the phone ringing for his sister’s phone that had gone to voicemail. “You have reached Lieutenant Harland Quinn. Leave a message with your name and number and I will return your call as soon as possible.” Pierre took a breath. Tess Walker, Jia Lei Yang,

[googlefont="Oswald"][googlefont="Allura"][googlefont="Abel"] BUT ALL THAT i've been thinking of Double figures and not a rescue anymore, that wasn’t what she wanted to hear. It was bad enough what had happened but that just made it all so real. Tess appreciated the do as she said comment, it wasnt that she couldnt hold her own but then again Quinn seemed to be taking this personally at least more so than the two of them could right them. Tess told Rachel that Quinn was okay and with them as he nodded seeing the protective glaze. “Another cop tried to reach for his belt for his radio and it got caught... wrong place wrong time.” Tess answered reading the messages flying back and forth.
Tess was about to head inside when she heard the ask to get into the scene. Glancing over at Jia, the more hands the better but it wasnt pretty and she didn’t need him getting into any trouble. “See that is the issue with Patrol, you think yeah you’re just patrol but you guys make it easier for us to do our job.” Tess stated as she rolled her eyes. She was really going to regret this choice in life, “Fine you can work this with us but you stay within eyesight and if anything feels off you stop right where you are. No hero stuff.” Tess explained biting her lip.
This was a headache waiting to happen and one she didnt quiet know what to do with. Tess saw the message on her phone saying she would message Quinn. Totally fine, will be back with you soon just helping out at Med. Are you okay? Tess figured if he was working it would distract him from his sister and it was all anyone could hope that they were all okay. “Look at me Pierre, do you understand what I said. No funny stuff, no hero and stick with the two of us.” Tess asked clearly worried about the man and his state of mind.

Partners, which just explained it all. She could understand why he was so, well why he was being as he was, Jia might have been the same way too if she had a partner involved. Since moving to Chicago, Jia had gone out of her way to stay away from people. Never get too close and she could never get hurt again, it was a great way of working until those moments when just like that day. She had no one to go home to, no one to tell her it would all be okay and no one to worry about other than the people she knew by a last name and a badge number.
“Sister wow I can see happiness runs in the family.” She said rolling her eyes lightly, Jia might have been a little happier if her work place was still standing and the people she cared about were freely going about their day. Attitude was the only thing she had left to give to the day, bad or good the world was in pieces. “Fine Quinn or Patrick whatever your name is.” She added still trying to decide if any of this was a good idea.
Jia caught Tess’s eyes as she listened to her talk about the patrol guy issue. Okay well she had a good point with making their jobs easier, patrol was the backbone and they got to do their work because of it. Her issue was on every scene there was some patrol issue that lead to an entire standoff or just a lack of patrol which became a headache. “Same as what Tess said, Patrol has this chip on their shoulder but if we work together then it goes smoothly.” She added as she winced hearing Tess said that Quinn could work the scene with them.
Tess seemed to cover everything and yes an extra set of eyes and hands would help. She just hoped they could all keep it together long enough to get the job done before anyone kicked them off the case. Working out of the same precinct it was only a matter of time before someone took over and that Jia was least looking forward to. “We’ll track down your sister too; she’s probably busy at the hospital or with Patrol working. The signal is a little iffy at times right now.” Jia tried to explain trying to mellow toward Quinn, it was no lie given the amount of mobile traffic. Family, friends and work all trying to get hold of the same people at the same time for generally the same thing.
